To witness an outright world speed record broken is an achievement for us mere mortals who do not compete. To see it broken again within days is exceptional. To add to this mixture, another one way top speed being recorded that surpassed both records, but unfortunately did not go down in the books due to its one way nature, making it unacceptable as an official record, this was BUB 2006 at Bonneville. With 11 miles of as good a salt track as seen for many years, plus full FIM and AMA sanctioned and observed runs, this was the big one for the two wheel warriors of speed. This story will continue with BUB 2007 in September again at Bonneville where the stakes are higher along with the speeds after another year of development from the really fast runners. Now that the 350 MPH barrier is breeched the next hurdle is 400 mph…..
‘Ack Attack’, designed and built by Mike Akatiff in 2002 and ridden by Rocky Robinson, has a carbon fibre shell over a conventional thinking tubular chassis. It is powered by two coupled Suzuki Hyabusa, single turbo charged engines, producing between 700/900 HP at the rear wheel. Rocky recorded a speed of 344.963 mph for the kilo and 344.673 mph for the mile, a phenomenal first run. Pressure was on to return within the two hour window to break that |

elusive 16 year oldrecord of 322.149 mph by Dave Campos and the Harley-Davidson ‘Easyrider’. After around 45 minutes and well within the required time limit, word came down the return run was underway. Several seconds later a speed of 341.291 mph and 340.922 mph was relayed back just as the liner came into sight at the Mile Zero point. The record was going to be theirs with an average of 343.127 mph for the Kilo and 342.792 mph for the mile. Harley-Davidson had been toppled at long last. A new outright solo motorcycle world record after 16 years on Sunday the 3rd September 2006 and rider Rocky Robinson had made history with his first two runs of the meet.
BUB ‘7’, designed and built by Dennis Manning, ridden by Chris Carr, is a state of the art, composite construction streamliner, powered by a custom built 3 litre, four cylinder motor. It is turbo charged and produces in the region of 425 BHP to drive through a four speed gearbox to the rear wheel. Their very first run caused gloom in the Top Oil ‘Ack Attack’ camp when the 354.995 mph Kilo and 354.832 mph mile speeds were relayed back. The return runs of 347.129 mph Kilo and 346.937 mph mile really caused deep depression with the record now going to Chris Carr on only his eighth stream |
